The Duke of York’s military affiliations and royal patronages have been returned to the Queen, Buckingham Palace has announced, after it was confirmed that he was likely to face a civil trial for sexual assault. It is understood that the duke will also no longer be styled “His Royal Highness”.
“The Duke of York will continue not to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen,” the Palace said in a statement.
Earlier today former members of Royal Navy, RAF and Army described in an open letter to the Queen their “upset and anger” at Andrew retaining the titles, saying that his position was “untenable” and urging her: “Please do not leave it any longer.”
She has no choice as his civil sexual assault trial is set to begin.
